Shalom Quest
Convene
Creating ‘safe brave spaces: in person or online’ is a foundational phrase when talking about Shalom Quest. However, these will only happen if someone like you says, “Yes, I want to host a Shalom Quest space” and then does it! This deep inner response is the only qualification needed from you to convene ‘a safe brave space’ – plus a commitment from you to everyone entering the space that you are there only to help and support them find their own unique path.
We do hope that you will decide to convene a Shalom Quest space (SQ Space). You will not be alone; we will support you all we can. Also, each one of us is learning, so let’s share our experiences together. To help you, here are some initial suggested steps for preparation and convening:
Preparation
Step One: Watch the “What is ShalomQuest?” film through several times:
- There is a full written filmscript available for you to follow as you are watching (audio version)
- Note the strong images – waves, surfing, walking, conversation – used in the film
- Note the key concepts – spirituality, flow, shalom, values, your path – used in the film
- Note the definitions given and questions raised in the film as the ideas unfold
Step Two: Work your way carefully through the whole of the Shalom Quest Homepage’
- This will orientate you as to the shape and bigger picture that is Shalom Quest
- Follow each of the ‘click-button’ links
- Capturing and imbibing the Shalom Quest ethos is vital
- Being familiar with the website will enable you to guide others in finding material
Step Three: Give time to read the three extended articles available on ‘click-button’ links :
- Read: ‘What are the Shalom Quest aims and ethos?’
- Read: ‘Shalom as a spiritual focus’
- Read: ‘Values as a spiritual focus’
- They open up the heart of where Shalom Quest comes from and wants to go to
Step Four: If you have any questions or concerns about hosting or convening Shalom Quest:
- Don’t hesitate to email Noel with your ‘phone number and he will set up a one-to-one ‘phone conversation with you
Facilitation
Step One: Invite people you think might enjoy exploring the Shalom Quest experience:
- Welcome to everyone
- Introduce yourself, making it clear you too are a ‘spiritual explorer’ as well
- Encourage each person to self-identify in a way that is comfortable for them
- A ‘SQ Space’ has no pressure or expectations, it’s always respectful and confidential
Step Two: Watch the film together as a neutral objective point from which to begin:
- What did you feel about the film?
- Did anything surprise you about the film?
- Did you find the film helpful in any way?
- Did you have any issues with the film?
Step Three: What themes or questions do they want to talk about (some starter suggestions)?
- What is ‘spirituality’? Is the film’s inclusive view wider than most people think?
- Is the idea of ‘shalom’(peace, wholeness), a single value holding all values, helpful?
- Living by values rather than rules. Is this attractive? Is it possible?
- Is a spiritual path being like a wave inspiring? Liberating? Terrifying?
Step Four: We would very much value any SQ Spaces: Feedback you are able to give:
- What went well, and why?
- What didn’t go so well, any reasons?
- What other resources might it have been helpful to have?
- Would you be willing to spread ‘SQ’ information and invitations via your networks?
- Would you be willing to host ‘SQ Spaces’ with isolated individuals looking wanting to share in a group?
